What Are The Best Rv Battery (Deep Cycle, Lithium, AGM)

We suggest buying two American-made Battle Born 100Ah LiFePo4 12V Batteries if you have the budget.

Many factors contribute to the superiority of Lithium Iron Phosphate LiFePO4 batteries over lead-acid batteries. A good AGM is also a fairly good alternative if you don’t have the budget. The expected life from a LiFePO4 is about ten years, but most AGM batteries, on the other hand, will last between 3-5 years if properly maintained.

Why Do You Need A Deep Cycle Battery?

A deep cycle battery is one that is designed to provide consistent power output (discharge) over a long period. A standard cycle for a lead-acid battery is when depleting a battery to max 50% and recharging it. For Lithium batteries (LiFePO4 ), approximately 100% of the charge is used before recharging the cycle is required.

On the other hand, a standard automobile battery is designed to produce a brief burst of energy, usually enough to start your car, before handing over power generation to the alternator. Because the battery should be kept fully charged, it is not designed to be cycled in the same applications as a deep cycle battery.

The AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) Battery

According to manufacturers’ specifications, most AGM battery life cycles should be around 300 complete discharges to 10.5V, but you will never want to discharge to that level anyway. Therefore your life cycle should be 900 at 50% at 12V discharge capacity.

The best way to care for an AGM battery is to recharge (top-up) it after minimal use. Using it this way will ensure your AGM will last at least three years.

You will have the most battery life when you use the battery with slight discharge and recharge cycles. Using it at a heavier load and recharge cycle will shorten its life. Massive discharge over the recommended 50% causes the most degradation in this battery type.

What happens with an AGM battery when it gets discharged?

Every time you deplete a battery, lead sulfates form on the plates inside the battery, inhibiting the chemical reaction needed to recharge it. The deeper the discharge, the more lead sulfates form, causing you to use more voltage to break down the sulfates. If you don’t recharge immediately, the sulfates turn into hardened crystals that permanently destroy the battery’s cells.

Ways to extend the life of an AGM battery:

  • Connect it to a solar panel which will help it to top up now and then so it will never go down to the danger levels
  • Good quality DCDC charger: a good DCDC charger will help maintain the voltage and amperage through several charging phases made for AGM batteries. Since it knows when to apply the correct charging amperage to a specific voltage level, you can be confident that it will not get damaged through sulfate buildup. Here are some variations:
    • 24Amps
    • 40Amps
    • 50Amps
  • A good voltmeter: to properly monitor the voltage level of the battery so you can plan your top-up regiment when it reaches the 12.2v level, making sure it never drops to the 11Vs.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) Deep Cycle Batteries

You will be surprised at the performance change when upgrading from a lead-acid to a lithium iron phosphate battery. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) is relatively stable lithium chemistry compared to all other lithium chemistries.

The cathode material (iron phosphate) used in the battery is safer to use. Iron phosphate forms a robust molecular bond, enhancing cycle life and chemical integrity. As a result, these batteries offer excellent temperature stability, high energy density, low self-discharge, quick charging, and long cycle life.

Maintenance Is A Breeze.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries, unlike lead-acid batteries, feature a built-in Battery Management System (BMS) to avoid overcharging. The BMS ensures that all of the cells in a battery bank receive the same amount of charge. Overcharging lead-acid batteries accelerates grid degradation and shortens battery life.

Handling And Safety

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries have surpassed all other battery types as the best option for RV, marine, automotive, and general solar PV applications.

They’re incredibly safe, may be installed indoors, and are an excellent mobile living and entertainment product. You merely need to check that the battery and cables haven’t been shaken loose while on the trip. There is no off-gassing from LiFePO4 batteries.

Superior Discharge Depth

The depth of discharge (DoD) of a battery bank is the amount of stored energy that can be spent without significantly reducing the battery bank’s lifespan. A LiFePO4 battery doubles the DoD than any lead-acid battery. That means you require a much smaller battery bank than lead-acid.

Small And Light-Weight

When it comes to weight, they are absolute featherweights. Lead-acid batteries are 60 percent heavier than LiFePO4 batteries. Driving an RV with your LiFePO4 battery saves weight and, therefore, money on gas. They are also more compact compared to lead-acid batteries

Good luck, and happy camping!
