At $140, it is affordable for most RV owners and is thin enough that it can be moved with ease and not cause a problem of movement. We recommend having one or two of these on hand when the RV will be filled to the brim, as this usually causes much more heat to build in the RV.

What Size Are Bunk Beds In Different RVs?

Now that we know the smallest and largest sizes for bunk bed mattresses, we need to look at the different RV bunk bed mattress sizes. Each of these has average sizes used, especially as the people who use them grow and change.

You will often find that the average RV has the smallest bunk bed because of the other things that need to be held in the RV. While smaller campervans that are made to be as space-efficient as possible use the mattresses for different things, allowing them to be larger.

Small Campervans

Small campervans are those vans you see on the road that barely look like they have any space to move in. These vans usually only have one bed in them that needs to be disassembled when not in use; however, a few have been made to sleep multiple people.

In these campervans, you will find that the bunk beds are usually in the back of the van and are much smaller than even the smallest average beds. Coming in at only 22-inches by 68-inches, most adults sleep curled up in them, while it is still cramping for children to sleep in these bunk beds.

Medium Campervans

A medium-sized campervan is what we know to be campervans that were just normal transport vans before their conversion. These are the Mercedes Benz Sprinters of the world, the ones that have enough space to almost be considered a normal RV but are still small enough to fit underneath most bridges.

Usually, when bunk beds are built into these vans, they are along one wall of the van and allow slightly longer mattresses that are not thicker. The average size for a bunk bed mattress in a medium-sized campervan is 30-inches by 75-inches, making them comfortable for even most adults.

Normal RVs

A normal RV is the one you imagine when someone mentions an RV; they are almost as long as a bus, and only a few have walls that can extend. These RVs rarely actually have bunk beds, and when they do, several parts of the RV’s comfort have been sacrificed.

Instead, as extra beds, these RVs convert the couches into extra double or single beds when everyone is ready to go to bed for the night. The average size for bunk bed mattresses on a normal RV is around 28-inches by 75-inches, with some having longer mattresses that go up to 80-inches.

Larger RVs

A larger RV is considered as long or slightly longer than a normal bus and will have one or two walls that can physically expand once the RV is parked. These RVs are all completely different and have been made to last for several decades without needing to be radically updated.

Oddly enough, these RVs have average-sized bunk bed mattresses, usually around 30-inches by 80-inches or 34-inches by 75-inches, depending on who they are aimed at. These mattresses are meant to be used by kids and adults, so their quality is better than most others.

Deluxe RVs

Only a few people will have the chance to look at deluxe RVs, but they are usually worth every cent you will have to pay for them. These RVs have walls that extend out and have full furniture for you instead of the smaller RV-focused alternatives that you would usually find.

Bunk beds in deluxe RVs are usually full-size single bed mattresses that measure around 35-inches by 79-inches and are not simple foam. These mattresses are full spring or memory foam mattresses that make the bunk beds as comfortable as any other bed that you may find in the RV.

How Long Is An RV Bunk Mattress?

RV bunk mattresses are measured by their width more than their overall length, which means most are long enough for the average person. Around 75-inches to 80-inches is where everyone prefers to have their bunk bed mattresses, allowing everyone to fit comfortably.

We always recommend choosing this length as very few people won’t fit comfortably in them. If someone is longer than this, they’ll comfortably be able to bend their legs without having to go fully into a fetal position to be completely comfortable while sleeping.

However, it should be noted that there are much shorter bunk bed mattresses that are meant to be used when you have children sleeping in the bunk beds. In contrast, some mattresses are much thinner but longer that are meant to be used as couch cushions when everything is set up to be used for the day.

What Size Are Double Bunks In RVs?

Double bunk beds are not entirely uncommon with RVs, with some having triple setups, with the lowest bed being on the floor and the highest one against the roof. It is important to note that each bunk bed will have very specific measurements that need to be considered in these RVs.

The mattresses in these bunk beds are usually below 30-inches in width but will still be quite long, with most being around 75-inches in length. However, several mattresses are only 60-inches in total length to ensure that the entire bunk bed does not take up too much space on the RV.

We have seen several RVs that have bunk beds across the wall before the main bedroom of the RV, with the bunk beds being much shorter than normal. These bunk beds are meant to be used by children, with most teenagers being too long for the bunk bed to be comfortable.

How Thick Should A Mattress Be For A Bottom Bunk?

One thing that is often overlooked by everyone upgrading or using their new RVs is that the thickness of a mattress is important. Most flat surfaces are fine to sleep in when the mattress is only one or two inches in total thickness, creating the padding needed to sleep safely.

However, most bunks on the bottom will be on uneven footing, requiring that you have a slightly thicker mattress to keep everything comfortable. Bottom bunk bed mattresses should preferably be around four to five inches thick to ensure that everyone is comfortable.

The mattress at the bottom is also less likely to be moved or used for anything else, which means that it will have to be able to be used as a storage location. Many people use the bottom bunk of a bunk bed as the first spot used to store excess luggage.

How Do You Decide How Big A Bunk Mattress Should Be?

When you have a supplier willing to make custom-sized bunk bed mattresses for your RV or van, you need to know how to decide the size. Most people mistake choosing a mattress that is too small for the bunk bed frame that has been built.

The mattress should be the thickness you know will be the most comfortable, while the mattress should be a few millimeters wider and longer than the frame. Doing this ensures that the mattress will be able to fit into the frame instead of sliding around it and becoming uncomfortable.

It is important to remember this; the best bunk beds have slightly larger mattresses instead of just being the perfect shape. Making it larger will ensure that your mattress fits snugly instead of loosely, creating a more comfortable bed overall.

The best RV bunk bed mattress that we have found on the market is the Zinus 5-inch memory foam mattress. We recommend considering the different sizes of mattresses and who will be using them when you install them.

Remember that your mattress size matters to the people who will have to sleep on them for every vacation!

Good luck, and happy camping!
